Refresh a room without starting again

A room refresh can begin with rearranging the objects you already own.

A room refresh can begin with rearranging the objects you already own. Before making a shopping list, notice what feels awkward, crowded or overlooked. A small change can be worthwhile when it makes the room more pleasant to use.

Choose one view

Start with the view from the doorway or from the seat you use most. Remove the loose objects from one surface and put back only the things you want there. This is not a rule to keep everything minimal; it is a way to notice individual objects again. Take a moment to use the surface before deciding that it needs more decoration.

Move a familiar material

Try bringing a cushion, vessel or lamp from another room if it suits the new location and can be used safely there. A repeated material or color can connect the change to what is already present. Check that the move does not make the original room less useful. The aim is a better arrangement of what you have, not a chain of empty spaces to fill.

Live with the change

Use the room normally for a few days before deciding what is missing. Notice whether the new arrangement is easier to clean, reach and move around. If you do add something, give it a specific job in the room. A considered addition is easier to assess than a purchase made only to recreate the feeling of a reference photograph.
